Sam and Diane parted ways after thirty-four years of marriage. Sam was in the bewildered, lost phase of divorce. His dreams were shattered, and he was lost as to how to pick up the pieces. He shared them one night in our divorce recovery group. One of those dreams was the purchase of their property in northern Michigan overlooking the lake. It was there where they would retire and spend their later years, but it didn’t work out that way. They had planned during their married years, but now it was just Sam. He ached for his lost dreams, his lifelong plan in which he heavily invested.
There are moments we sit in our pain and sadness, when nothing can be said to make it right. Until something needs to be said. It was Rachel from the group who spoke to Sam, and her response was as if the heavens opened and gave an answer to Sam’s broken dreams. “Sam,” she began shyly, “what if you took all those dreams and laid them in the hands of God to make them happen in a different way from what you planned? They could still happen, but in God’s ways.” Sam looked intently at Rachel. She gave him hope he had not seen before.
You can trust God with your life, your children, and your dreams. He is trustworthy. He has exceeded what I imagined for my life, and He will do the same for you. He has not forgotten the dreams of your life, even though you may have or feel they could never come true. Maybe God has better plans for you than you have for yourself. I have seen my life unfold greater than I could have planned. God is faithful to us and created dreams in us to be fulfilled into an abundant life. If you think this is a fantasy, you are missing what is real in Christ’s work on the cross. He holds abundant living and pleasures in His hand.
- John 10:10—“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
- Psalm 16:22—“You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”
I don’t know what will come of Sam’s dreams. But I see Sam’s willingness now to open his hands and heart to what awaits him. God will tenderly hold the dreams of your life and guide them to a better way, an eternal way to benefit others, and to bring honor and glory to Himself. And that is a life and a dream well lived.
